Canadian authors for students with a special interest in Canadian
literature. Students will study the themes, forms and stylistic
elements of a variety of literary texts representative of various time

respond personally, critically and creatively to them.

This course emphasizes the strengthening of essential reading and
writing skills. Students will read short plays, short stories, novels,

main ideas and supporting details, extending personal knowledge,
responding imaginatively and using specific strategies to expand
vocabulary. An important focus will be on writing clear, accurate and
coherent narratives, summaries, reports, letters and short essays
using correct grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Media Studies, Grade 11 Open.
This course emphasizes knowledge and skills that will enable
students to understand media communication in the twenty-first century
and to use media effectively and responsibly. Through analyzing the
forms and messages of a variety of media works and audience responses
to them, and through creating their own media works, students will
develop critical thinking skills, aesthetic and ethical judgement and
skills in viewing, representing, listening, speaking, reading and
writing.

ENGOA
This course is intended primarily for students who plan to go to
university. All students taking only one OAC English must take this
course. The literature studied includes a representative selection of
essays and a balanced selection of peoms, prose, fiction and plays.
The writing component of this course consists of various modes,
written for various purposes and for real and imagined audiences. Must
of the writing consists of short expository essays.The course will
also include the following aspects of langauage study; language work
needed to improve students' writing; an examination of the usage,
structure and style of the literature selections for the course, and
techniques of effective oral and written expression. Finally, the
course contains an independent study unit culminating in a formal
report that includes both an oral and a written component.
Prerequisite: One anvanced senior division English Course.

ENGOA
This course is designed primarily as a writers workshop. The
literature studied includes many short literary selections(essays,
short stories, one-act plays, peoms and excerpts from longer works),
chosen as examples of the writer's craft. As well, students will
examine the writers' views on the theory and the practise of writing.
The written component of the course consists of writing in various
modes, for various audiences. Writing, including pre and post-writing
activities comprises at least one half of class time. The course also
includes the following aspect of language: language work needed to
improve students' writing; an examination of usage, structure and
style; and language as it applies to writing, including the language
of specified fields and the usage of various genres and media. There
are independant study topics arising from students' interests. These
culminate in a piece of origional writing such as a short story, a
script or an analysis of the style and structure of a work of
literature.
