FOOD AND NUTRITION

 

This course explores the factors that affect attitudes and decisions about food.  Current issues of body image and food marketing, as well as global food issues are examined.  Students will learn how to make informed choices and how to prepare tasty meals.

PARENTING

 

This course focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to promote the positive and healthy nurturing of children, with particular emphasis on the importance of the early years.  Students will learn how to meet the developmental needs of young children, communicated and discipline effectively , and guide early behaviour.  They will have practical experiences with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

LIVING AND WORKING WITH CHILDREN

 

Students will explore child development and occupational opportunities while learning how to create meaningful activities to meet developmental needs of children.  Students will study child behaviour and child development in the context of relationships with parents and others in the community, and will learn through research and by observing and interacting with children.  RECOMMENDED TO TAKE WITH COOP PLACEMENT IN DAYCARE OR KINDERGARTEN

FASHION AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION

 

Try your hand creating your own garment and accessories.  This course focuses on the language of fashion design and an understanding of the elements and principles of design.  Students will become aware of the various facets of fashion and the variety of career possibilities in the fashion industry.

MANAGING PERSONAL AND FAMILY RESOURCES

 

In this course you will develop the essential skills necessary to meet the demands of life during the first five years after high school and beyond.  Discover your talents through practical projects.

FOOD AND NUTRITION SCIENCES

 

This course takes an investigative approach on food and nutrition issues in Canada.  Areas covered include: the function of food in the body and the relationship between food choices and well being, societal nutritional issues and the impact of technology on food and nutrition.  Discover where your food comes from.  Trace the journey from "farm to table" or is that "lab to table"?

THE FASHION INDUSTRY

 

This course provides a historical perspective on fashion and design, exploring the origins, influence, and importance of fashion as an expression of national, cultural, religious, and personal identity.  Students will learn about the many facets of the fashion industry, including entrepreneurial enterprises, as well as gaining practical experience in apparel design, production, and care.

INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IN A DIVERSE SOCIETY

 

This course looks at the history of the family and its future.  You will investigate why opposites attract... or not, and explore the pros and cons of different lifestyles.  Current theories and research from disciplines of anthropology, psychology and sociology are applied to the study of individuals and families.

FAMILIES IN CANADIAN SOCIETY

 

This course looks at many issues Canadian families experience today while adapting to the rapidly changing demands of modern society.  Students will analyze such issues as the increasing rate of cohabitation, divorce, childless couples, single parents, the aging population and family violence.
