ECI Rocks On
Report on the Battle of the Bands

Holy Hooters Batman! Wow, what an event! The night of Thursday, December 6,
2001 proved to be one of fun times and good melodies.  ECI's Battle of the Bands displayed just what kind of a show that old, dingy, sometimes smelly auditorium could put on.
The show, the first one of it's kind at ECI, was definitely a success, seeing at least 120 students including family members of performers come knocking on the doors of 86 Montgomery Road for the 6:00pm start time.  And what a start it was! The band Mondana kicked the night off with excellent covers of the 70's rock band Pink Floyd. Along with the added Chris
Spearing antics on stage, adding effect along with humour, Mondana was definitely a crowd-pleaser.
Another artist raising the standard in her own respect was Basia Bulat. On stage with nothing more than an acoustic guitar in her lap and a microphone in front of her, her presence gave the auditorium a feel more a kin to that of a coffee shop. The cheers she got after the ten minutes that just didn't seem long enough, were just as intimate.
Also worthy of extra praise was the duo of Kyle and George, giving a stellar performance which involved for the most part Kyle beat boxing and George rapping over it.  (For those unsure of what beat boxing is, it is when one contributes a rhythmic beat through the learned collaboration of their lips and breath. A microphone amplifies this collaboration. For more information please contact Kyle Nolan).
Other notable performances included the punk band Head On Collision, the duet of Danika and Milena, the drum-off between Jordan Baker and Bobby Bulat, and the band Ellen Burstyne with their cover of the theme song for Requiem for a Dream. The night was then capped off with the very elegant singing of Student Council President Aabed Meer.
Not only did the audience seem to have a fun time, but also did the administrators that attended. Mr. Mackenze and Mr. Ellis were more than happy at the turnout and how the night's performances flowed so well.
The event's organizers were just as happy. Troy Sexton, Clark Vales, Jordan Baker, and myself did our best at making sure the night flowed as smoothly as it did. There was definitely room for improvement but given the fact that a MusicFest of this calibre had never been held at ECI, the night could not have gone any better.
Great job ECI, thank you for all the support. The proceeds of that night will be put towards the music section of the FAT in May.
