Etobicoke Collegiate offers only two different physics courses, one in grade 12 and one in OAC. The reason for this is that the mathamatics required for the course is not taught until grade 11. Below is an overview of the two courses.

Physics 12 (code SPH4A)

This course has the following units: mechanics, electricity, electromagnetism, sound, and nuclear physics. The course give students the opportunity to understand physical concepts, handle equipment intelligently and safely, and appreciate the applications and implications of physics in technology and society.Labwork is also an essential part of the course.

Physics OAC(code SPHOA)

This course contains the following units: kinematics, dynamics, momentum and energy, electrostatics, waves and light, and early quantum theory. Often if time permits other units are taught as well, such as special relativity, bodies in equilibrium, elementary particles, or electromagnetic radiation. Each study unit will specify items such as student laboratory experiments, precision in measuring, graphical skills, reports, problem solving including mathematical problems graphical analysis and vector diagrams, and the derivation of equations from first principles. The goal for students is the development of a greater awareness and understanding of our physical world of matter and energy.
