Co-op students are currently involved in a wide variety of work experiences. Several ECI students have attended Toronto District School Board training centres for half of the co-op course. At these centres students are taught job specific skills by trainers from business and industry.
In the second half of the co-op course the trained students are ready to enter a co-op work experience and be productive very quickly on the job. Training centres are located across the city. We are fortunate at ECI to have several in Etobicoke.
The Multimedia Centre trains students in the use of computer programs used widely in business such as PhotoShop, Illustrator, Premier, Quark, Director, Dreaweaver, PowerPoint, and 3D studio. Students completing this training often enter companies specializing in print, web design, graphics, advertising, and post-production houses.
The Computer Technology Center trains students in the hardware of computers. Training focuses on electronics, system tear down, system inspection, system assembly, how a computer works, hardware, printers, peripheral, operating systems, the internet, communications and networking systems. Students completing this training n often enter companies having a help desk, computer stores with repair/upgrade departments, and support within schools.
The Logistics Centre opens February 2000 that will train students to provide the services involved I n the flow of goods and information from the source to the consumer. Training will focus on material handling, inventory control, transportation, purchasing, E-commerce, ISO, just in time, order selection, storage devices, and accuracy. Students completing this training could enter companies that utilize logistics internally for companies that handle products for clients. Jobs could range from buyer, accounting, marketing computer applications, purchasing, shipping and receiving, customer service, transportation co-ordination to fork life and truck driver in the industry.
The Aerospace Centre opens February 2000 and will train students in the theories and principles of flight, aircraft and flight environment, airline/airport management and aircraft maintenance and repairs. Students completing this training will enter companies requiring aircraft maintenance, inspection, engineering, software engineering, machinists, electronic assembly/fabrication, business and management positions as well as pilots.
The CITI Motive Power Centre is open to students interested n pursuing careers as Automotive Service Technicians or Truck and Coach Technicians. As a selected participant in the Youth Apprenticeship program the student must attend Centennial College (Astonbee Campus, Scarborough) for trade specific instruction. It is a two-year program. Other training centres such as Carpentry, Construction, Tourism, and Culinary Arts are run in a semestered model at this time. ECI students usually cannot adapt their program to enroll.
RESEARCH The talents, interests and skills of students at ECI are vast. Several strong academic students have been placed for their co-op work experience in unique research positions. We are very fortunate to have access to research placements in The Hospital for Sick Children, Mount Sinai Hospital, Women’s College Hospital, The Centre for Research in Health, Toronto General Hospital, University of Toronto, Ontario Power Technologies, and Boeing Canada. These placements are filled by ECI’s top students looking for unique academically challenging opportunities and contacts.
